چکیده

Definition An invasive, non-native, alien or exotic species is one that has been intentionally or accidentally released into an environment outside its native geographical range of habitat (Olenin et al., 2002). In the UK, according to Eno et al. (1997) the term ‘nonnative’ is used to indicate a species that has been established in UK waters, whilst ‘alien’ species are those that have been introduced via human activities but which have not become established and are incapable of establishing self-sustaining populations without deliberate intervention by ‘man’ (Eno et al., 1997). ‘Alien’ species are also referred to as ‘nonestablished’ species (Eno et al., 1997).

Ecological niche modeling of invasive alien plant species in a protected landscape

Non-native plants that can cause adverse effects are otherwise known as invasive alien plant species which pose a major threat to plant biodiversity conservation and sustainability. This study is dedicated to determine the plant diversity and to assess the vulnerability of Quezon Protected Landscape, Southern Luzon, the Philippines to invasive alien plant species. Data from 90 10x10 m randomly ...

Environmental implications of plastic debris in marine settings--entanglement, ingestion, smothering, hangers-on, hitch-hiking and alien invasions.

Over the past five or six decades, contamination and pollution of the world's enclosed seas, coastal waters and the wider open oceans by plastics and other synthetic, non-biodegradable materials (generally known as 'marine debris') has been an ever-increasing phenomenon. The sources of these polluting materials are both land- and marine-based, their origins may be local or distant, and the envi...

Assessing impacts of invasive phytoplankton: the Baltic Sea case.

There is an increasing understanding and requirement to take into account the effects of invasive alien species (IAS) in environmental quality assessments. While IAS are listed amongst the most important factors threatening marine biodiversity, information on their impacts remains unquantified, especially for phytoplankton species. This study attempts to assess the impacts of invasive alien phy...

Parasites and marine invasions.

Introduced marine species are a major environmental and economic problem. The rate of these biological invasions has substantially increased in recent years due to the globalization of the world's economies. The damage caused by invasive species is often a result of the higher densities and larger sizes they attain compared to where they are native. A prominent hypothesis explaining the success...

Global Coordination and Standardisation in Marine Biodiversity through the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and Related Databases

The World Register of Marine Species is an over 90% complete open-access inventory of all marine species names. Here we illustrate the scale of the problems with species names, synonyms, and their classification, and describe how WoRMS publishes online quality assured information on marine species. Within WoRMS, over 100 global, 12 regional and 4 thematic species databases are integrated with a...
